Improving Outcomes in Acute Otitis Media
An Intense Hands-On Workshop
Course Description

This CME Program is an interactive-multimedia presentation designed to enhance skills in the diagnosis and management of otitis media in children. The program provides hands-on experience in the use of traditional and recently developed diagnostic aids.

Educational Objectives
This program will allow participants to:

  • Assess their ability to diagnose otitis media.
  • Describe the role and value of pneumatic otoscopy, tympanometry, and acoustic reflectometry.
  • Perform diagnostic tympanocentesis on mannequin models.
  • Identify the role of first and second line antibiotics in otitis media.

  • Review the normal tympanic membrane (TM) and middle ear anatomy and physiology
  • Examine variations in common pathological conditions

PART II. Interactive Hands-On Training

  • Demonstrate tympanocentesis in the office/clinic setting
  • Tympanocentesis: Infant head mannequins with changeable tympanic membrane (TM) inserts are used to simulate the "look and feel" of popping through the TM

PART III. Antimicrobial Management Lecture
The lecture "Antibiotic Selection for Acute Otitis Media in an Era of Rising Bacterial Resistance," emphasizes the role of first and second line antibiotics in acute and recurrent otitis media management.
