An In-Depth
Discussion of HPV
|
|
| |
Statement of Need
HPV is a highly prevalent sexually transmitted infection, with more
than three-fourths of all sexually active adults exposed at some
point in their lifetime. Young women are at highest risk for HPV
infection following the onset of sexual activity. Infection
with high-risk HPV types (16 and 18) is associated with the
majority of cases of cervical vulvar and vaginal neoplasia and cancer. Despite the
success of cytology screening programs, the burden and
cost of HPV-related infection remains a significant public
health concern. A prophylactic HPV vaccine that protects against
types 16 and 18 HPV and types 6 and 11 that cause genital
warts is expected to have a dramatic
impact on HPV-related morbidity and mortality.

Course Description: |
This program presents an analysis of human papillomavirus (HPV), as
well as discusses the complications and problems associated with
this infection. The rationale and recommendations for the use of a
newly licensed HPV vaccine will be reviewed to include the
appropriate patient population for the vaccine, the effect and
outcomes of the HPV-16/18/6/11 vaccine on immunogenicity against the HPV
virus in women, and safety and efficacy results from large clinical
trials with HPV vaccines.
Educational
Objectives:
